Direct action has been used throughout history as a powerful tool for
social change. Ordinary people have been responsible for all major social
changes - women's rights, civic rights and even democracy itself in many
places can be said to be result of direct action.

Climate change is the most urgent challenge we've ever faced - and yet
instead of serious sustainable solutions we see new runways and new coal
fired power stations. Are you interested in doing more to highlight the
urgency of climate change? Come to this workshop on direct action by
Climate Camp.

with Kevin Smith (Carbon Trade Watch) and including a Screening of 'The Carbon Connection'.

When world leaders negotiate a new climate agreement this December, they
will promote one solution above all others: carbon trading. The EU already
has its own carbon trading system; in the US, Obama is working hard to
push a 'cap-and-trade' system through Congress. But what is carbon
trading? What is the theory behind it? How does it work in practice? And,
most importantly, will it help us avert climate chaos?

Discover the truth behind carbon trading in a unique workshop organized by

* Take action with claimants at Hackney Job Centres - meet Thursday 2 July 12pm * at Cafe Bohemia (under the railway arches by Hackney Central)

Claimants at the job centre demand:

1. We are treated with respect and dignity when we are using the Job Centre. There are 37 claimants to every job in Hackney: being unemployed is not our fault and we do not enjoy being treated as we’ve done something wrong

2. More care be taken with our claims and a receipt be issued when we submit documents. Too many of our documents have been lost too many times.

"Lonely, isolated, in despair? Or doing loads of stuff and want everyone else to know about it?

Come along and meet others like yourself in a quiet, safe and protected environment ..."

No-one booked to speak at this meeting, just show up and natter about Hackney politics over a drink. Hopefully there'll be news on the progress of the Hackney Heckler, HSN's long-gestating community-politics newspaper.
