Apologies for short notice -- we have only just heard that about these huge cuts to nursery budgets in Hackney, and we want to mobilise people to help try and save them, so we are organising an emergency public meeting THIS THURSDAY 22ND APRIL 6:30 P.M. -- further details below. It is outrageous that Hackney Council/The Learning Trust should think that they can get away with attacking services to women and working-class people in this way, and just before the election.
Events
This will include:
*A very rare opportunity to have a short tour of the long closed Haggerston Pool
*A chance to find out from Haggerston Pool Community Trust about the plans that are underway for its re-opening
*A chance to meet prospective candidates for the local Ward, Hackney Mayor and Parliament - and let them know what you think about Haggerston Pool and other local issues - in a friendly, informal setting
Timing
Hackney & Tower Hamlets Friends of the Earth and Hackney Environment Network present
*Hackney Green Hustings*
Come and ask all the major political parties what they will do for environmental and green issues in Hackney, and across the UK.
Whether you're interested in energy and fuel bills, green spaces, transport, waste or climate change, this is an excellent chance to ask *your* questions to a cross-party panel of the parliamentary candidates for Hackney North and Stoke Newington. Please join us!
Our panel:
- Diane Abbott, Labour
- Darren Caplan, Conservative
Usual monthly meeting for Hackney campaigners looking to network with their peers (and have a drink...)
FRIENDS OF HACKNEY NURSERIES INVITE YOU TO A HUSTINGS MEETING -
THURSDAY 29TH APRIL, 6:30 P.M., OLD FIRE STATION, LESWIN ROAD
In the last few days, under cover of the election, many community nurseries have been told that, with immediate effect, they will be having cuts in their budget of up to 60%. This means cuts of £40,000 to £50,000, which will lead to the serious threat of nursery closures, and hardship and distress for parents, workers and children. Meanwhile, the Learning Trust and Hackney Council are denying that there is a programme of cuts to nursery provision.
Programmed and presented in collaboration with Birkbeck Film Society, this screening and discussion reflect and question the relationship between art, activism, urban regeneration and gentrification. The three films offer different perspectives on these issues and speakers Dr Paul Watt, Senior Lecturer in Urban Studies, Birkbeck College and Andrea Gibbons, Los Angeles based organiser of tenants rights movement, will outline salient questions to frame a dynamic discussion.

As discussed at our AGM, once the general election is over, we will need to take stock and consider what the resulting government means for trade unionists generally, and for Hackney in particular. It seems that whoever wins we are facing severe cuts in public spending. We are therefore calling a meeting on Wednesday 19 May in the basement of the CAFE MOSTRA, 86 Stoke Newington High Street, Stoke Newington, London, N16 7PA. Please note this is a new venue for us.
All welcome
