Hackney Unites grew out of anti-BNP campaigns in 2008 and 2009. Aware of the impact of low participation in Hackney and a proportional representation system in both the GLA and EU elections we sought to mobilise Hackney voters to participate (and by increasing the total number of votes cast making it harder for the BNP to reach the 4 or 5 percent necessary to win seats).
To achieve this we brought people together from different faith, community, trade union, political and campaign groups.
